Free Norwich workshop on accessing funding

DowningStreetNorfolk Christian and church leaders are being invited to a free session on how to translate the language of Government to enable them to access funds and resources for mission purposes.

The free workshop, on Thursday 26th November 2009 at Norwich City’s Carrow Road football stadium, is being sponsored by YMCA Norfolk and the Jerusalem Trust and senior staff or congregation members of local churches and Christian organizations are being invited along free of charge.

YMCA Norfolk chief executive, Tim Sweeting, said: “The prophet Amos challenged and railed against the systems; yet Joseph was entrusted to rule Egypt with Pharaoh. As Christians we can choose how we react to or relate to government.

“The aspirations of this government and Christian organisations very often coincide. Government is currently anxious to draw the third sector into service delivery.  They have created a dedicated Office of the Third Sector, yet one third of grants available were unspent in 2008/09.

“Government is expressing a willingness to develop and strengthen churches, and have recognised that we have principles and priorities that we cannot and will not set aside. Can we and should we work together with them to improve our communities? And if so, how?”

Funding expert Paul Whitnall will look at some recent and live examples of government initiatives, which may help churches deliver their mission and realise their dreams. This will include translating the language of Government into one that we can understand.

There will be workshop instruction in responding to government initiatives, and a look at the Community Asset Transfer programme and the latest Community Empowerment White Paper.

YMCA Norfolk executive assistant, Susie Knights, who is organizing the workshop, said: “This will be a great event for church and Christian leaders across our county to better understand the messages that Government is currently sending and how it can impact upon us, our congregations and our communities."

Two sessions, both delivering the same presentation, will be held in the Board Room at Norwich City Football Club, Carrow Road (click here for directions) on Thursday 26th November 2009 at 2 pm till 4.30 pm and 6 pm till 8.30 pm.

This is a free event sponsored by YMCA Norfolk and the Jerusalem Trust but registration is essential.
